GARLAND CIVIC THEATRE TO PRESENT COMEDY

Garland, Texas, August 28, 2008 — Garland Civic Theatre will present the very funny play “Heaven Can Wait” by Harry Segall. Performances are scheduled for Thursday through Sunday, October 2 to 25, 2008 at the Granville Arts Center, 300 North Fifth Street in downtown Garland. Tickets which are $16 to $20 with discounts for youth, seniors, and groups can be ordered by calling 972-205-2790. Please note that some of the performance times have changed. Thursday evening shows are now at 7:30 PM and all matinees are at 2:30 PM. The Friday and Saturday evening times remain at 8:00 PM. The Arts Center box office is open week days 10 to 4. There is a convenience charge of $1 per ticket. On performance days the box office opens 2 hours before each performance. Ride DART to the theatre and get a discount on your ticket.

“Heaven Can Wait” has been the inspiration for several movies. The first was in 1941 and starred Robert Montgomery; another starred Warren Beatty in 1978. The Robert Montgomery movie was called “Here Comes Mr. Jordan” and was awarded two “Oscars”. The play is described in the following sentences. Mr. Jordan is checking passengers who are to depart on an airplane to the Hereafter. The routine is interrupted by the arrival of Joe Pendleton, an attractive prizefighter who refuses to admit he is dead. Joe is not scheduled to arrive for another sixty years! But as Joe starts to return to Earth to continue his fighting, word reached Heaven that Max Levene, Joe’s manager, thinking he had been killed, had Joe’s body cremated, and Joe has no body to return to. Jordan promises to find Joe another body and is informed that the wealthy Jonathan Farnsworth is about to be murdered by his wife. So Joe suddenly finds himself in the home of the financier, visible as Joe to the audience but apparently as Farnsworth to Mrs. Farnsworth and the public. This is a delightful evening of comedy that will touch your heart and leave you smiling for a long time to come.

The cast includes Gregory Hullett as Joe Pendleton, Leah Granger as Bette Logan, and Lonny Schonfeld as Mr. Jordan. Others in the cast are David Baskin, Cathy Browning, Aaron Garelis, Dana Harrison, Emily Myrick, Jeremy Osborne, Rich Raymond, and Dan Tillman. Peter Ray is directing, the set design is by Clare DeVries, and the costumes are by Jeulet Noyes.
