Garland Morning News, 8/22/04
If you did not see The Pirates of Penzance at the Granville Arts Center, you missed the treat of the year.
The super-talented actors and actresses singing, dancing, and performing their way through the afternoon were an amazing display of ability, talent, and lots of practice.
Special appreciation to all involved with the Garland Civic Theatre. You did yourselves extra proud, and a fun, happy time was had by all.

Yo-ho-ho
Gilbert and Sullivan show promises some major laughs
Ann Pinson, Dallas Morning News
At first, it's difficult to sing the tongue-twisting Pirates of Penzance song "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major General" without running out of breath.
A bushy fake mustache makes it even tougher to do.
"It's put on with spirit gum," say Brandon Whitlock, 16, who will play the mustachioed Maj. Gen. Stanley for a Children On Stage production of the show. "It's very uncomfortable, but you get used to it after a while."
Children On Stage, an offshoot of Garland Civic Theatre, will start performances of the comic Gilbert and Sullivan operetta on Thursday. The cast ranges in age from 10 to 18.
The Pirates of Penzance follows Frederic (Brian Harden), who was mistakenly apprenticed to a band of pirates by his nursemaid. When he turns 21, he thinks he's free to leave the pirates.
He meets and falls in love with one of the major general's daughters, Mabel (Erin Frisbee). However, the situation becomes complicated when Frederic finds out that he's technically still indentured to the pirates.
The wacky antics of the pirates (who are too kindhearted to really excel at their profession) and the timid policemen round out the show. Of course, the major general also has his moments.
"It's a fun role, because I get to be the crazy old guy who is basically only there for the comedy," Brandon says.
Be sure to listen carefully if you go.
"Within the songs, there are jokes," says Erin, 18. "It's very clever."
